Ash is still having trouble sleeping. He is starting to feed, stopping and refusing to take anymore and then crying 15-30 minutes later to eat again. Of course this only happens at night when Johanna is trying to sleep. She is completely exhausted.
This weekend is a big family get together at our house to get to know Ash. That should be a lot of fun. Until then here is a picture of Ash with his Uncle Alec and another with his Grandpa Craig, both of whom stopped by this week to see him.

grandpa and grandma Lealos
Well, Ash just got to spend an entire weekend with his Grandpa and Grandma Lealos. It was perfect timing too since I went back to work this past weekend and Nancy was here to stay with Johanna while I was working.
It was a great time as Ash got to know my dad and I think everyone enjoyed it.
Things have been tough. Ash's belly has been aching really bad and he has been crying a lot the past few days. I am pretty sure his tummy hurts and that is why because when he passes gas, he usually settles down. We'll talk to the doctor about that Thursday at his appointment.
On a really cool note, I rolled him onto his stomach, hoping the pressure would help him pass gas and releive the pressure. He was so pissed off that he actually rolled over on his own! I thought it took a kid months to be able to roll over but he did it, albeit in angry mode.
Still, it was pretty cool!

Dreading Friday
Well, Friday I go back to work. I am really not looking forward to it, but I don't have a choice or else we go broke next Tuesday...
I have read in the parenting books we got that some dads feel neglected when the baby arrives and it can cause jelousy between father and child. That, in no way whatsoever, is what has happened to me. I don't feel neglected. I feel like I am not helping enough. Ash wakes up crying and there are only three things he needs right now - changing of diaper, eating or cuddling. I can do two of the three, but more often than not it is food he needs and there is nothing I can do to help out there. As a result, Johanna is double tired compared to me and I feel really bad about that.
Good news is I can change the diaper like a Nascar driver. I can also swaddle him like no ones business. When I go back to work, this weekend, at least my dad and stepmom will be here to help out because I would worry the entire time I am at work otherwise. That will come next weekend. I am so glad she gets 5 weeks maternity leave because I am definitely not energetic enough to go back to work tomorrow and I know for a fact she is in worse shape than me.
As a filmmaker, I wanted more than anything to whip out the camera and start to video my son doing whatever it is kids do. I know, I know, he's only 6 days old but every time we lay him down to let him do whatever he wants he cries until we pick him back up. Is that normal? I don't know. He can't be put down unless he is asleep or he throws the biggest tantrums.
We are learning as we go and Steve and Nancy get here tonight, so that will be his next new experience.

Yard Work?
So, what does a father do during the first week of his son's life when sleep is non-existant? Yep, yard work.
Last night, Grandpa Craig took us out to dinner at a restuarant called Chedders and Ash was asleep by the time the car got out of the garage. Then we got to the restuarant and he slept through the entire meal. It was a miracle. So, to make things interesting, I woke him up after we finished eating so he could see his grandpa while we were there.
Of course, I also had to take him to the bathroom personally to change his diaper. Not that he needed it changed, but I had to carry him through the restaurant so everyone could get the chance to "ooh" and "ahh" over my boy.
Last night was another tough night. He wanted to eat constantly (Johanna said they were timed apart just right, but they seemed to come right after each other in the clock in my head) and cried a lot.
We have his grandpa Steve and Grandma Nancy coming in tomorrow to help us out for about a week, so what do Johanna and I do with help on the way? We clean as much as possible before they can get here. Go figure... I did the lawn and tried to find the section of the fence that our puppy Tater keeps getting out at to fix. Johanna did the floors in the house and laundry and I did the dishes, cleaned the kitchen and finished the guest room (finally).
Steve and Nancy are getting here just in time because I start back to work Friday and I am glad Johanna has extra hands for my first days away from home (12 hour work days for me).

Day 4
Wow, he does not like to sleep at night. After my hour of non-stop crying Monday night, he wouldn't sleep last night and Johanna only got a couple of hours of sleep as she was feeding him all night long.
Uncle Ian, Aunt Solange and cousin Aiden came to visit yesterday as well and he is getting to know his new family little by little.
I also did my best to make sure he becomes a true Oklahoman last night. We watched WWE Raw and listened to ZZ Top. He is well on his way...
I have discovered the first time that everyone has their own ideas for what is best, but no one agrees on the solution. This one is about the best way to take a baby's temperature. Our well baby class said the most accurate device is the new digital forhead thermometers that use an infrared light to detect his temp. Then I read on medical sights online the only accurate way is to use a rectal thermometer. Then we had to watch a video before leaving the hospital that said we should NOT use a rectal thermometer and use one under his arm pit. Three different opinions, all claiming to be the right way.
We went for our first wellness checkup today. We found out his crying is probably because he is so gassious. That will settle over time. He also turned out to be 11% jaundice (15 is bad), and the nurse said it will clear up over the next few days. He loved the car ride and slept the entire trip.
Grandpa Craig is taking us out to dinner tonight, so we'll see how Ash does in public!
Here are two more pictures until later.

First Night Home
We got home around noon and Johanna refused to sleep. She actually sat on the couch and held Ash forever, even though Jo had not slept hardly at all in the last three days. I laid down for a minute and woke up a few hours later.
Good thing.
At about 2:00 am, Ash started crying. Johanna had went to bed and I told her to stay there and I would take care of it. She needs sleep - I really don't as much.
He had a dirty diaper and I figured this would be an easy one. I changed him and put him back to bed and he started crying again. He was not due for a feeding for another hour but was making motions like he was hungry, so Johanna got up and fed him. I put him back to bed, she went back to bed and then he started crying again.
I started some music for him (he listened to classical before he was born, so I pulled out Bach). It soothed him - as long as I held him. Then I put him in bed and he began crying again. I walked with him and he finally burped up, making me believe that was what was wrong. I put him back in bed and he started crying again.
Diaper - Check
Feeding - Check
Burping - Check
I was running out of ideas.
He just wanted to be held. An hour later, he was asleep in my arms and I gently laid him back in bed and he is now sleeping, giving me a little rest.
