First Night Home

We got home around noon and Johanna refused to sleep. She actually sat on the couch and held Ash forever, even though Jo had not slept hardly at all in the last three days. I laid down for a minute and woke up a few hours later.

Good thing.

At about 2:00 am, Ash started crying. Johanna had went to bed and I told her to stay there and I would take care of it. She needs sleep - I really don't as much.

He had a dirty diaper and I figured this would be an easy one. I changed him and put him back to bed and he started crying again. He was not due for a feeding for another hour but was making motions like he was hungry, so Johanna got up and fed him. I put him back to bed, she went back to bed and then he started crying again.

I started some music for him (he listened to classical before he was born, so I pulled out Bach). It soothed him - as long as I held him. Then I put him in bed and he began crying again. I walked with him and he finally burped up, making me believe that was what was wrong. I put him back in bed and he started crying again.

Diaper - Check
Feeding - Check
Burping - Check

I was running out of ideas.

He just wanted to be held. An hour later, he was asleep in my arms and I gently laid him back in bed and he is now sleeping, giving me a little rest.

  1. He has started his training of his Mom & Dad right on schedule. Hopefully he won't get discouraged in your ability to learn quickly. Some Dads take extra time that could be used for other important lessons like staying posed when he is directing his pee at you, not freaking out when he has liquid burbs when you are face to face, etc. Be a good student Shawn.

  2. Duh. Babies think our only responsiblity in life IS to hold them. Get used to it... of course there are worse things in life than holding a sleeping child.....
